Here is my CV
Anastasia Rybina-James is a Russian-born British interdisciplinary artist, musician, and performer whose work moves between sound, visual art, and critical research. Her practice explores the intersections of folklore, linguistics, naming systems, archiving, body-technology relations, psychology, and the creative process — often through sound, moving image, performance, costume, and installation.
After receiving a Master’s degree in Project Management in Moscow (2010), Anastasia worked within the illustration and film industries, studying Costume Design for Film at Mosfilm Studio before relocating to the UK. There, she completed both her Arts Foundation and BA in Fine Art at Falmouth University, where she experimented with printmaking, painting, sculpture, sound installation, and performance.
Her exploration of voice began under the guidance of Jill Purce, whose teachings in overtone and Tibetan throat singing introduced her to the spiritual and psychological dimensions of sound. She later trained in traditional Russian folk singing with Nina Kolyada, whose mentorship continues to inform Anastasia’s practice.
Anastasia’s ongoing research spans psychological anthropology, focusing on transitional and grieving practices, particularly lamentation songs. In parallel, she is deeply engaged with technological experimentation, working with modular synthesis, bespoke instruments, and DIY electronic setups. Her Fine Art dissertation examined the relationship between body, technology, and performance, reflecting her broader inquiry into how sound shapes consciousness.
During her time at Falmouth, she co-founded the JOMO Art Group — a “temporary micro-climate” of artists exploring slippages, failures, and alternative rhythms of creativity, re-imagining concepts such as boredom, laziness, and will.
Since moving to the UK in 2012, Anastasia has been involved in DJing, electronic performance, and collaborations with Aphex Twin (Richard D. James), appearing on stage with a modular synthesiser setup as part of his live crew.
She also leads drawing and performance workshops, merging artistic process and self-inquiry as part of her research into voice and consciousness.
Anastasia is currently developing her first EP, combining modular synth textures with vocal improvisation.
